Directory Drilldown directly from Top Pages

Building on the strengths of the existing Top Pages report, this is inspired by the legacy Content Drilldown functionality in Google Analytics.

Current Limitation: The current Top Pages report excels at showcasing individual page performance. However, for a broader content strategy understanding, analyzing website sections in aggregate can be highly valuable.

Proposed Improvement: Group URLs by their corresponding folders within the website structure. This provides a high-level overview of user engagement across different content sections.

Benefits:

  • Identify Content Trends: Analyze overall performance trends within specific website sections (e.g., blog posts, product categories). This helps pinpoint areas excelling in user engagement or requiring optimization efforts.
  • Strategic Resource Allocation: Allocate resources more effectively by understanding which folder structures drive the most traffic and conversions.

thanks for the feedback @Carlos Bronze!

analysing pages in aggregate or analysing completey sections of your site is already possible. here are some options:

  1. check out the filter button on the top of your dashboard. it allows you to filter by multiple pages and to group pages with the “contains” option. see more here https://plausible.io/docs/filters-segments#using-the-filter-button-for-extra-functionality

  2. same also works with our pageview goals so you can keep the most important sections permanently displayed in your dashboard. see https://plausible.io/docs/pageview-goals

  3. and last but not least, if you want even more flexible options, you can start sending custom dimensions alongside pageviews to create custom metrics for post authors and similar. see more here: https://plausible.io/docs/custom-props/introduction

i hope this is useful, thanks!

Hi @Marko Saric

I appreciate your reply but those things are not substitutes for what i was talking about. Ive attached an image with the old GA Content Drilldown.

It was very useful for looking at the site structure and visits. It was not a filter, it didnt display only pages with something in the url. It provided a way to effectively compare how sections of the website were performing.

Thanks @Carlos Bronze! Hmm I see. How were these pages grouped in UA if not by page path? The screenshot you shared looks pretty much the same as how this would look in Plausible if you setup pageview goals for each of these folders. Did you try that?

They are grouped by path. But automatically grouped together by “level”.
The main difference from goals is that you could click on a directory and see the most viewed pages (and subdirectories) within that directory
In the attached screenshot, for example, we would have:

Page Visitors
/ 7
/blog/ 4
/about/ 1
/books/ 1

Then you could click on /blog/ and check the most visited pages within that directory.

I’ve found this youtube video that might help explain and visualize the feature I’m talking about:
(specifically talking about subpages at 01:57)

Our pageview goals do the same from what I see. Set up a pageview goal for any specific directory that you want, then click on that pageview goal in the Goals section in your dashboard and then the whole dashboard would only show the data for data directory. This means that the Top Pages section would then show you all the content within that directory only ranked by number of visitors. You can see an example when you filter our live demo by the blog directory goal

I see. Thank you. I still feel weird about calling it a goal and having to set it up for every subfolder.

I would very much appreciate if it could be automatized and accessed via the pages section.

You can also do the same using the filter button if you prefer not to create any goals. Just filter by pages, choose “contains” and add whatever directory you want to analyze.
